How Pilates Is Modified for Osteoporosis
Pilates that is safe for osteoporosis isn’t about simply slowing down a regular Pilates session. The exercises are adjusted to reduce the risk of fractures. Because osteoporosis reduces bone density, several movements are avoided or modified, including loaded spinal flexion, spinal rotation, and lateral flexion. The instructors at Core & Restore Pilates in Huntsville, AL will teach you how to hinge with proper alignment and modify exercises for safety. You’ll learn safe ways to bend and lift, improve postural endurance, and challenge your balance to help reduce the risk of falls and fractures.
What most people with Osteoporosis worry about before starting Pilates
“I’m afraid exercise could cause a fracture.”
When Pilates is adjusted for a person with osteoporosis specifically it is a safe and effective method of exercise that does not cause a fracture. Pilates can actually help reduce your risk of fractures for example by improving your balance through Pilates you are less likely to fall, which prevents fractures.
“I have had a spinal compression fracture. Can I still do Pilates?”
Yes, you can participate in Pilates after being cleared by your MD for exercise after having a spinal compression fracture. If you have a history of spinal compression fracture please let the instructor know prior so we can guide you appropriately during the session. We often get clients who have had a previous compression fracture and are now learning how to safely regain their strength after prolonged break from exercise to allow for healing. We are equipped to safely provide modifications and adjustments to Pilates exercises as you transition back into exercise.
“My balance is poor and I am afraid of falls.”
Balance is often an area that our clients are concerned about for this exact reason and why we really value how Pilates incorporates balance elements within the exercises to gain more confidence on your feet. When you have a strong base to work from, like the ability to hold oneself upright without difficulty, that will carry over to how you move about your home with ease or walking through the grass to get to the playground with grandkids without a second thought.
“I have not exercised in years.”
Pilates equipment session is a great starting place for someone who hasn’t exercised in years because it provides a support system. Often people are intimidated by the Pilates equipment, but the equipment is like a support beam when a building is being built, then as you gain more strength the support beams start to be reduced. The process of getting started after not exercising can feel like a big step and we are here to guide you through the process so it feels doable one exercise and session at a time.
